Following a 37-year career in the United States Foreign Service, David Shinn now teaches African studies at George Washington University. While in the Foreign Service, he served at embassies in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritania, Cameroon, Sudan, and as ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. Ambassador Shinn is currently engaged in a two-year study of China-Africa relations.
