China in the World Featured in Education About Asia
Primary Source's newest publication for teachers and students, China in the World: A History Since 1644 (Cheng and Tsui, 2008) is favorably reviewed in the current issue (Volume 14, Number 2, Fall 2009, page 57) of Education About Asia. Caryn White Stedman, global studies curriculum specialist and social studies department chair at Connecticut's CREC Metroplitan Learning Center, finds the sourcebook "unabashedly a teaching volume that successfully provides the instructor with both background material and highly effective pedagogical approaches to help students understand the complexities of modern Chinese history." China in the World is Primary Source's second publication for teachers and students on Chinese history and culture. Like The Enduring Legacy of Ancient China (Cheng and Tsui, 2006), China in the World is a book and CD-ROM set created by teachers and Primary Source curriculum specialists that explores China's captivating history through engrossing historical narrative and hundreds of primary sources. Unit overviews, introductory essays, and timelines provide context for better understanding the events and implications of China's complex history. A wealth of primary sources—imperial edicts, sea captains' letters, short stories, poetry, essays, posters, photographs, and cartoons—allows students to explore events from multiple perspectives and through many genres. Primary source-based activities foster analytical thinking, hone verbal skills, and ask students to consider history as a complicated, messy, and fascinating subject. Educators should note that The Enduring Legacy of Ancient China is particularly suited to upper elementary and middle school classrooms, whereas China in the World is designed especially for high school students. |
