Primary Source Global Read: Learn About the World and Help Kids in Need

girlintranslation

Join Primary Source and readers from around the world on December 1st to expand your understanding of the interconnected world we share. Then, read a free children's book online today and help provide books to young people in Asia. There are two parts to this special campaign.

Part 1: Read Girl in Translation with Primary Source

Join Primary Source for an online book discussion of Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok. Girl in Translation is the story of Kimberly Chang, a young girl who emigrates with her mother from Hong Kong to Brooklyn. As Kimberly navigates life from a Chinatown sweatshop to the Ivy League, the book explores themes of identity, race, family, adolescence, and immigration. It won a 2011 Alex Award as one of the 10 best adult books that appeal to teen audiences. It is appropriate for high school students and adults. Participants must obtain their own copy of Girl in Translation.

December 1, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST
Live, online Q&A with author Jean Kwok

Use this link to log in to the live chat on Thursday, December 1st.

Part 2: Read a Book. Give a Book.

In addition to joining a diverse group of readers for a discussion with author Jean Kwok, you will also have the opportunity to join with others in providing books to children in need. Through the Pearson Foundation's We Give Books initiative, you will be able to trigger a book donation just by reading a children's book online. We Give Books is a digital initiative that enables anyone with access to the Internet the ability to put books in the hands of children who don't have them, simply by reading online. We Give Books combines the joy of reading with the power of helping others, offering families and educators an easy, engaging way to encourage children to become motivated readers and lifelong givers.

Primary Source's We Give Books campaign was highly successful, raising over 500 books in one week. We encourage you to participate in other We Give Books campaigns to continue to help kids in need.

It's fun and easy to get started! Go to WeGiveBooks.org to read and donate today!

Your participation in this Global Read will help provide books to children in need and provide you a unique opportunity to expand your world by reading Girl in Translation with a community of global citizens.
