Summer Institutes

Massachusetts History: Remarkable People and Stories

Online orientation dates: Approximately 6 hours, completed between June 13 and July 13
Course dates: July 16-20, 2012
Course time: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: Primary Source (Watertown, Massachusetts)
Follow-up session: September 27, 2012, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
PDPs offered: 67.5
Graduate credits offered: 3
Fee: Partnership educators—no cost other than fee for 3 graduate credits; Non-partnership educators—$600 plus fee for 3 graduate credits

This institute will examine how life was organized in Massachusetts from pre-colonial days to the early Republic and how ideas and experiences changed over time. Sessions will focus on people, events, and themes featured in the Massachusetts Frameworks for teaching U.S. and Massachusetts history. Special attention will be paid to methods used by historians to create these accounts and how students can access history through biography. Topics will include: Pilgrims, Puritans, and religion; colonial-Indian encounters; transatlantic interactions and trade; African-American contributions; events leading up to the Revolution; and changes after the Revolution.

Recommended for educators of grades K-6
