Brookline Teacher Travels to Ghana with Primary Source

Amy Neale, a library teacher at the Driscoll School, took a two-week trip to Ghana, sponsored by Primary Source. She was one of 21 teachers from across New England to participate in the tour hosted by the Watertown-based organization, which provides professional development and curriculum resources to K-12 teachers and schools.

Primary Source to Offer New American Art Course in 2008

Massachusetts Cultural Council Funding Provides Crucial Support for Programs

Thanks to the support of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), Primary Source offered a range of high-quality programs featuring the arts during the 2006-2007 school year. Participants in our recent Doorways to Islamic Art workshops explored tessellations, calligraphy, and architecture with hands-on activities and were inspired to bring these themes into their classrooms. Teachers enjoyed creating replicas of Egyptian tent wall panels, decorated with Arabic calligraphy and used in traditional celebrations. One math educator planned to collaborate with a colleague in the art department to create an interdisciplinary unit on patterns, using Islamic art as his case study.

Massachusetts Awarded The Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize for Excellence in International Education

Massachusetts, May 17, 2007 - The State of Massachusetts has been awarded the Goldman Sachs Foundation Prize for Excellence in International Education in the State category.

This year's winners of the awards program, sponsored by The Goldman Sachs Foundation and Asia Society, will be honored at a luncheon ceremony at Asia Society's New York City headquarters on May 31, 2007. Massachusetts is one of four winners for this year's prizes, who will each receive $25,000. A separate group of scholarship prizes are awarded each fall to outstanding high school students who submit written or multi-media applications demonstrating their knowledge of international affairs.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Caroline Elkins Speaks at Primary Source

On February 27, 2007, Harvard professor Caroline Elkins, author of Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya, shared her insights on a little-known war with an audience of 65 people at Primary Source. Her book, which won the Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction in 2006, chronicles Britain's gruesome eight-year war against Kenya's Mau Mau independence movement - and the British Foreign Office's propagandistic attempts to cover up its nation's brutality.

An Evening of Conversation with Greg Mortenson, Founder, Central Asia Institute

On January 10th, Primary Source was pleased to welcome humanitarian Greg Mortenson, co-author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time. A former mountain climber-turned-education advocate, Mortenson engaged his audience in a critical discussion about global literacy, girls' education, and the importance of promoting peace through education.
