On Friday, October 23, 2009, 300 guests gathered at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for a colorful celebration of Primary Source's accomplishments over the past twenty years and its vision for the next two decades and beyond.

Primary Source's "Gala for Global Education" brought together teachers, administrators, legislators, and educational leaders, all of whom were treated to the drumming and dancing of Senegalese group Sing Sing Juniors, an unannounced lion dance performance from students at the Calvin Chin Martial Arts Academy, and a lively and interactive display of Bollywood and Bhangra dance.

Freeman Foundation President Houghton Freeman and William Schulz, former director of Amnesty International USA, were honored for their work to inspire teachers and students to learn about the world. The evening also featured brief remarks from Kathy Ennis, Primary Source's Executive Director, and Paul Reville, Massachusetts Secretary of Education.

Ms. Ennis spoke about the "fundamental questions" of teacher development and multicultural education addressed by Primary Source's founders. Changing immigration patterns, the increasingly international nature of business, and the rapid growth of technology "point to the need for a 21st century education that prepares our children to be globally competent," she noted. "Primary Source, a visionary organization 20 years ago, is now centrally involved in a discussion about updating the learning experience for all of our students."

The evening, as one attendee described it, was "a global feast for the eyes, ears, and palate." Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and guests, Primary Source raised nearly $200,000, all of which will help to support the organization's newly launched five-year Campaign for Global Understanding.
