Primary Source Provides Knowledge and Tools to Educators Across the U.S.

Since 1989, Primary Source has provided face-to-face professional development workshops primarily for K-12 teachers and administrators in New England. In 2011, with a growing array of online courses, webinars, and resources, we are expanding our reach and providing educators across the country with the knowledge and tools they need to prepare students for today's interconnected world.

Educators from California, Washington, DC, Hawaii, and other states joined us this year for courses on global issues, primary sources, and world regions. Xin-yi Fergusson, a teacher at the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia, writing about the online course, Changing China: History and Culture Since 1644, said, "Throughout the course, I enjoyed reading the comments and conversations from fellow teachers and seeing their perspectives on issues, questions, and possible solutions. I have gained a new appreciation and understanding of China as a nation."

deberardinisThe ability to connect with new audiences online means that Primary Source is also expanding the number of teachers from outside Massachusetts who come to Boston for our summer institutes. Rene deBerardinis, Director of Libraries at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia heard about us during last year's Global Education Online Conference. She said the week-long Teaching for Global Understanding in the 21st Century institute, held at Boston College, "provided a strong foundation for my own personal and professional learning around Global Studies…The many course materials, lesson ideas, and workshop connections will inform my own teaching, that of my colleagues, and my school library's collection development."

With Primary Source's expanded slate of online courses and resources, educators from across the U.S. and around the world can find tools for teaching about global histories, cultures, and issues, all without leaving home. Upcoming free webinars include a three-part series about the history and culture of Afghanistan, as well as a worldwide online book discussion with author Jean Kwok. Over 65 resource guides have been published by the Primary Source library with children's book ideas, links to curriculum, and embedded videos. We are also excited to announce a new lower fee for our 10-week intensive online courses about China. For just $375, you'll have access to leading scholars, rich content, and a community of educators interested in learning more about the world. Whether you join us in Boston or online, you'll find new ways to connect your students to the world and new knowledge to inspire and re-energize your teaching.
