Primary Source Remembers John Hope Franklin
African American history scholar John Hope Franklin passed away on March 25, 2009, in Durham, North Carolina, at the age of 94. The work of John Hope Franklin informed and guided Primary Source as we sought to uncover the stories of advocacy and agency throughout African American history. His own biography reveals both the ugliness of discrimination as well as an inspiring personal history of perseverance, grace, and triumph. Primary Source honored Franklin for his leadership and scholarship. During the 1990s, in collaboration with the Center for Afro American Artists in Roxbury, he spoke of the widened range of occupational options now open to African Americans. In 2000, the organization presented a tribute to Dr. Franklin at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, where he spoke to several hundred guests about his academic and political work. Primary Source remembers John Hope Franklin for his outstanding contributions to the field of history, his public service, and his inspiring life story. |
