Primary Source a Key Player in National Conference on China-U.S. Education

For over twenty years, Primary Source has been a leader in teaching and learning about China for K-12 educators. Drawing on this expertise, we are proud to have been the regional partner of this year's National Chinese Language Conference, held in Boston on April 7-9, 2013. In collaboration with Asia Society and the College Board, two highly respected international organizations, Primary Source worked with local partners to broadcast the important work being done in our local schools and communities to bring Chinese language, history, and culture to students.

Educators in New Bostonians Course Visit Local Immigrant Resource Centers

This spring, Primary Source hosted a three-day seminar series titled New Bostonians: Immigrants in Massachusetts Today. Thirty-four teachers came from all over the state to gain knowledge and resources to better understand immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This course was developed in order to provide educators with knowledge of the cultural contexts and situations that their immigrant students come from.

Fall River Teacher Helps Students Connect to Cultural Heritage

Last summer, Primary Source awarded three educators a scholarship to attend Cultural Proficiency in Today's Diverse Schools: A Multidisciplinary Approach, a summer institute for K-12 educators. Each scholarship winner was required to use ideas and resources they gained in the institute to implement meaningful projects in their schools. We caught up with scholarship winner Nancy Miranda recently to see how her projects are going and hear her thoughts on the importance of cultural proficiency for educators of diverse classrooms.

From Primary Source to the Classroom: Teaching about Colonial and Postcolonial Africa

In light of our upcoming 2013 summer institutes, we thought we would share with you how one past participant has applied the knowledge and resources he's gained to his teaching. (Visit our website for a full listing of this year's institutes and information on registering!)

In 2011, 42 teachers attended Primary Source's Africa in the 19th and 20th Centuries: Colonialism, Independence, and Legacies institute. Throughout the past year, we have had the opportunity to visit a few of their classrooms to see how they are using what they learned. Meet Todd Whitten, a teacher who is working to bring global education into the classroom and broaden his students’ perspectives about Africa and the world.

Global Mysteries: Beyond Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie

vishpuriPrimary Source's annual book group wrapped up last week with a discussion of Kwei Quartey's Children of the Street, a crime detective novel set in Accra, Ghana. This year's book group participants read mysteries set in Japan, Ottoman Turkey, Chile, India, and Ghana. Using mysteries as a vehicle to explore cultures around the world, book discussions focused on unique cultural aspects of each novel as well as the historical context. Below is a list of this year's book group selections with summaries. All books are available from the Primary Source Library.
