PDPs/CREDITS: 67.5 PDPs; 3 graduate credits

FEE: Partnership educators—no cost (other than fee for 3 graduate credits); Non-partnership educators—$750 (plus fee for 3 graduate credits)

Eaves - Shiraz IranWe will explore the major turning points, themes, and issues in the Middle East and North Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries in order to provide teachers with the knowledge and resources they need to help their students better understand the region’s history and contemporary issues. Over the course of the week-long institute, participants will conduct in-depth study and analysis of a variety of topics and events, including the breakup of the Ottoman Empire; decolonization and the rise of nationalism; the influence of oil and OPEC; US involvement in the region; the spread and influence of extremism; and the revolutions, wars, and migrations that have occurred since the Arab Springs of 2011. We’ll also explore the diversity of religions, ethnicities, arts, foods, music, literatures, and perspectives in the region in order to challenge stereotypes and better understand the many peoples who live there. We expect this course will appeal to teachers of grades 6-12 across many disciplines, including world and US history, geography, literature, music, and government.
