Why has suffrage--the principle at the heart of democratic government--had such a contested history in the United States? How does an examination of the uneven road of voting rights connect to interactions with peoples abroad or to “foreigners” at home? In this program, topics we will explore include suffrage on the eve of the Revolution; the Constitution and voting rights; political contests over suffrage in the 19th century; and voting trends, changes, and controversies since the Second World War.
