Our spring session for teachers of World History takes us to the ancient world with Michael Puett, Professor of Chinese History and Chair of the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University. Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism are three philosophical traditions that developed in pre-imperial states and have had profound impact on Chinese history. Confucianism became the Chinese sanctioned ideology and significantly influenced other East Asian states and cultures. Why and how did it disperse? And how can we help students recognize the influence and relevance of ancient Chinese philosophy for understanding World History, East Asian cultures and even their own lives today?
