Celebrating Board President Rosemary Pisano

20 November 2014

Rosemary PisanoWe sat down with current Board President and former educator Rosemary Pisano to hear her thoughts on global education, why it matters, and how it has changed over her 40-year teaching career.

How has the education landscape changed since you were an educator?
Global education has begun to present itself as the solution to many of the world's problems. Imagine how a more knowledgeable world citizenry could impact today's global issues? When I was still teaching, you primarily saw educators and parents championing the cause. Now, there is much more public awareness in the corporate world as well. More than simply a workforce issue, businesses understand that real world issues can be more readily solved through more informed thinking.

What drew you to Primary Source and its mission?
I discovered Primary Source in 2001-2002 when I attended a summer institute and travelled to China on back-to-back study tours. I was an immediate fan. With a Master's degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Education and many professional development courses under my belt, I can honestly say that the depth and breadth of content combined with the intellectual stimulation of a Primary Source program equaled or exceeded any other learning I experienced in my field. No other organization gives you learning opportunities that span grade level and discipline. It takes intellectual resources to capture and reach all kinds of learners, and Primary Source offers that to teachers.

How does it feel to support Primary Source through its 25th anniversary year?
It is an honor to play a part in such significant growth. The 25th Anniversary Celebration in October really showcased how far Primary Source has come, and what a powerful, thoughtful and vibrant organization it is. I am proud to lead such dedicated and committed Board members – individuals who relate to and believe in our mission to advance global education in schools – who understand the importance of our work in the education landscape. I am excited to watch Primary Source extend its reach and bring its signature quality to teachers across the country. I will be thrilled when my West coast family members (and everyone in between) can see the impact of Primary Source on the creation of their own global classrooms just as clearly as I see it here on the East coast.
