Donor Profile: Meet HNA Group

24 January 2016

HNA Group, a Global Leader sponsor of Primary Source, takes corporate social responsibility very seriously, and it shows in its philanthropy. We recently spoke via phone with Mr.Wang Jia, Project Development Director of HNA's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Department, from his offices in Beijing, to learn more about the company's approach to philanthropic giving.

Please describe HNA Group's philanthropy--what does HNA Group support and why?
Chen FengFor the past two decades, HNA Group has taken corporate social responsibility as one of its business development strategies. It maintains a corporate culture of “do something for society, and do something for others" based on the philosophy of its Chairman, Mr. Chen Feng (at right), who is dedicated to corporate social responsibility. To date, HNA Group has spent over $150 million on a variety of philanthropic activities. HNA Group supports initiatives both in China and abroad, including participation in UNICEF's Change for Good program on its Hainan Airlines international flights. It also provides food assistance to women and girls in Ghana through the U.N. World Food Program, and assisted with U.N. reconstruction efforts in Haiti. In China, HNA Group has implemented innovative programs, including Brightness Action, to provide dental treatment to those unable to afford it in western China; HNA Send Love Home, to provide airfare to poor university students so they can visit their families at Chinese New Year; and the Good Wells program, to provide clean water by digging new wells in rural China. In 2016, HNA Group's charitable foundation will begin focusing on programs to combat climate change.

What do you think are the connections between HNA Group's mission and its interest in supporting global education?
With expansion of its business in the United States, HNA Group wants to extend its philanthropic endeavors in this country. Primary Source is HNA's first U.S. partnership, based on the importance that HNA Group places on education, in general, and in-depth scholarship about China and the world, specifically. HNA Group's CSR Department, which is responsible for implementing the Group's philanthropic activities, has been very supportive of the Primary Source-HNA Group relationship, and looks forward to continuing this collaboration in 2016.

What aspects of Primary Source's mission and work are most interesting or relevant to HNA Group?
HNA Group supports the idea that we must change how we think about the world. Teaching about other cultures and histories is vitally important, particularly in an era when we face such global challenges as climate change. If we are going to reverse that process, all of us must become global citizens, to be aware how our individual and collective behavior impacts the world both near and far.

What would you like American students to know about China?
It is important for U.S. students to understand and appreciate cultural diversity, and there are many aspects of Chinese culture that are different, such as music, art, literature, and writing systems. It is essential to expose American students to the long and interesting legacy of Chinese culture and history, and to explore its differences and similarities to American culture and history. In addition, modern China is no longer poor and underdeveloped, so it is important that American students appreciate this, and understand how their counterparts in China think about their lives and the world.
