Join the Primary Source Global Council

28 October 2015

Wheelock Family Theatre

Imagine collaborating with a group of passionate supporters to help advance global education in K-12 schools around the country. You would be bringing your advice, enthusiasm, and engagement to the table to make funding decisions that enrich and support essential global programming for educators nationwide. That is what it means to be a Primary Source Global Council member.

The Global Council works to sustain the vision of our founders who understand that teachers are vital to shaping how children see the world; and that the key to inspiring students is getting rich content and primary sources into the hands of educators.

By creating the Global Council Fund, its members support innovative Primary Source programs and initiatives that have been prioritized for consideration by our staff of education experts. "Bringing the world to students requires a team of visionaries – globally-concerned people who want students to experience fascination and connection with the wider world,” explains Deborah Cunningham, Senior Program Director at Primary Source. “We welcome Global Council members to our cause, and look forward to the chance to discuss our newest ideas for programs and projects that will inspire teachers.”

The Global Council kicked off in April with a meeting that gave members the opportunity to become better acquainted with Primary Source and its staff. The group had in-depth conversations about international affairs, the importance of global education, and the role of the Global Council in funding and advocacy of our work.  Members chose to support the following from our 2015/2016 program initiatives:

  • India’s Century of Change (online course)
  • Unmuddling the Modern Middle East (3-day face-to-face seminar)
  • Telling Black Lives: A Book Group for Educators
  • Teaching World History: A Webinar Series
  • Five summer scholarships for Brockton area teachers

“Each offering seemed an obvious and worthy one to support, focusing on different aspects of global education,” says Global Council member Anne Covert. “We met the challenge of limited resources with lively discussion and input from staff which made for an informative, satisfying and fun meeting.”

The Global Council meets again in November to experience a Primary Source program first-hand and to find out how their funding decisions have helped advance our work. Professor Naghmeh Sohrabi of Brandeis University will present a briefing on Iran to our Global Council members, sharing with us events and trends not typically covered by the U.S. press.

Our hope is that through the Global Council, its members will become informed ambassadors who will bring new energy to Primary Source. For more information about the Global Council and how you can get involved, contact Judy Katz at judy@primarysource.org or 617-923-9933 x118.
